Returning to the marina after a good day of sailing should feel satisfying.
For many new sailors, however, the sight of the dock produces exactly the opposite feeling.
The sails are coming down. The fairway seems narrower than you remembered. Other boats suddenly look very expensive. Someone is standing on the dock watching. The wind seems to have changed direction at precisely the wrong moment.
And now you have to put the boat into a space that suddenly looks much too small.
The good news is that docking a sailboat is not about making one perfect maneuver. It is mostly about preparation, controlling speed, understanding what the wind and current are doing, and being willing to abandon an approach that isn’t working.
A well-planned docking can actually be remarkably calm.

- Gusts
- Current

- Fairway width

- Attached securely aboard

- Clear of the propeller

Many single-engine sailboats have a tendency for the stern to move sideways when reverse gear is engaged.
This is called prop walk.
